Academy of Art University
School of Architecture
At the School of Architecture, passionate students and accomplished architect-educators together work to shape the built environment in one of the most compelling professions you can enter today.
We are dedicated to advancing the art and practice of architecture by fostering critical thinking, artistic vision, and responsible leadership. Our programs develop each student’s capacity to synthesize architectural design and technical knowledge.
We are located in San Francisco, the origin of changes with global impact – a place with a long tradition of innovation and open mindedness. From our urban campus, we pursue architectural explorations that challenge the status quo to build a better world.

Setting
The Academy of Art is an open enrollment university which means that most students will have the opportunity to study with us. However, Architecture is a demanding major, and our NAAB-accredited programs are very rigorous. So, we provide individualized support for students who need it. Students receive support from a team of advisors and, most importantly, from our faculty who care deeply about each student’s progress.

Programs
For more information about our programs, please visit: https://architecture.academyart.edu/programs-of-study/
Bachelor of Architecture (150 units): The B. Arch program, accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), offers a path to architectural licensure accepted in all US states. You gain critical thinking and research skills, in addition to design and technical skills, in preparation for the profession. Fundamental design, ethical awareness, and liberal arts prepare you for upper division courses in which you create a body of work to demonstrate professional skills.
Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Design (120 units): The BA program provides a robust foundation in architectural design. The ability to define a problem, work through design iterations, and refine solutions are some of the transferrable skills that will prepare you for careers within and beyond architecture. With an emphasis on building strong portfolios, you can pursue graduate school or careers in architecture and related fields. Curricular flexibility means you can select courses that best meet your career goals.
Associate of Applied Science in Design of Built Environments (60 units): The AAS program offers an interdisciplinary approach to environmental stewardship. Create built environments that protect ecology, reduce environmental impacts, and address diverse needs. You will be mentored by practicing faculty to acquire design, technical, and communication skills needed to enter the profession. The AAS program is designed for seamless transition to the BA program.
Master of Architecture (Track 1 63 units, Track 2 87 units): The M.Arch program has two NAAB-accredited tracks. If you hold an undergraduate degree in architecture or a related field, M.Arch Track 1 builds on your foundation. If you’re entering without an architecture background, M.Arch Track 2 builds your skills from the ground up. Track 2 students will join Track 1 students after completing 24 credits. If you are seeking a faster path to architectural licensure, the IPAL program is available for both tracks.
Our studio-focused program integrates advanced design methods with technical competence. You refine your architectural perspective, expand your design skills, and strengthen your knowledge of contemporary practice. You gain fluency in current technologies, design theory, and the craft of building.
Master of Arts in Advanced Architectural Design (Track 1 60 units Track 2 36 units): MA Track 1 is for students with undergraduate degrees in Architecture. MA Track 2 is for students with undergraduate degrees in disciplines unrelated to Architecture. Track 2 students will join Track 1 students after completing 24 credits.
Hone your design skills, dive deep into research-based design methodologies, specialize in an area of your interest within contemporary architectural developments, design theory, or emerging technology. With guidance from faculty who are practicing architects, develop expertise to design, visualize, and construct sustainable environments.
